Tetragonia tetragonioides
Other common names: New Zealand Spinach
Where to buy locally
Additional cultivation notes
In warmer climates will often grow year round, but may die off in winter. Resistant to salt spray, so good for coastal gardens. Sensitive to frost.
Additional uses
Also native to New Zealand, Japan, Argentina and Chile, these Vitamin C and antioxidant rich greens have been used historically to ward off scurvy. They may also have anit-inflammatory properties. Like spinach, they are high in oxalates and so the larger leaves are best blanched in hot water before using.
